Analysis - Why record the experiment?
Science is a subject no one wants to miss! It's exciting, interesting and engaging, but what happens to students if they do have to miss a science class. Are they left behind? Do they get to still learn the material necessary for continuing on with the unit? They can! This is first and foremost why I recorded this experiment, however, there other great applications. This small film segment can be used as a part of a test review or can be repeated by a student who might have not understood the concept of chemical reactions the first time and needs another try. This video allows these students to play and replay their experience during class so that they can revisit the instruction. This enhances student understanding because it gives them a chance to look more closely at the steps performed in the experiment and see how they affected the outcome.
To bring this project one step further involving students in making videos of their own inquiry experiments would bring so much more meaning to them. This way they can share them with family and friends. Additionally their understanding of the concepts will increase as they break down the experiment into clear observable steps. When preparing to teach someone else the students will be able and will need to look more critically and more closely at the science as they will need to understand it in order to explain it.
